Artist's Statement
I love to paint. Painting is a celebration, a discovery process, a form of expression that delights, transfigures, and transforms. Painting is also meditation, a quieting of the mind, an inner discovery of color, light, shape, movement, and joy. Watercolor is its own message, that moments are precious and delicate, yet strong; fleeting, yet eternal; practical, yet transcendent.
I use a “beginner’s mind” to discover the painting, working with an open palette and fresh paint each day. I try to capture the light inside a subject, the hidden color and contour, the living conversation moving out of a landscape or still life, the noisy quietude of distant space. These paradoxes move so easily through watercolor, which is eager to dance at the slightest urging. To discover and capture the essence of an image, I paint quickly, loosely, freely, boldly, and silently.
This is an impromptu concert, an improvisation among brush, color, water, and paper, an experience of color, shape, mood, and light. A successful painting is one in which the viewer can become lost, gaze fixed to the image, conjuring up both fleeting and lasting interpretations of the work, taking the mind to new places, untold stories. I hope you enjoy these images.
